An update from Kokeena on tariffs, pricing, and the Kokeena difference
As you are well aware, tariffs have been in the news and have created chaos and spiked prices on so many everyday items - and that includes cabinets.
Let’s address this and share a bit of what we’re observing in the industry right now. Recent tariff changes are beginning to impact imported cabinet components and hardware. These changes have been especially noticeable with certain kitchen cabinet systems. Let’s call them the “IKEA tariffs” for simplicity.
At one of the U.S. stores of the Swedish giant, pricing is being held at current levels through the end of October. After that, we’re hearing they’ll “evaluate pricing.” In other words: the pause on increases is short-term, and rises in cost across cabinet products are likely.
So, will IKEA be affected by tariffs?
Well, yes. A kitchen layout that runs about $2,204.96 today might face an increase of up to 50 percent, or roughly $1,000 more. We’re keeping an eye on this and will post an update in 3-4 weeks when more clarity emerges.
Meanwhile, the U.S. stores have indicated that when pricing does go up, the increases will be broadly applied across all product lines. However I visited my local IKEA earlier in the month and that location is offering a 10 percent discount on orders over $3,000.
Where are IKEA kitchen cabinets made?
The boxes and interior shelves in that system are manufactured in the U.S. The hinges and drawer mechanisms come from a manufacturer in Germany (where wholesalers are expecting a 10-15 percent price increase). The doors in the system, however, are sourced from multiple countries outside the U.S. Even with parts made domestically, the final product price is still likely to rise.
Industry-wide changes, too
Looking beyond IKEA’s system, the whole industry is shifting. Many of our own competitors who import doors from Canada are reporting price increases in the range of +/-12 percent. Some cabinet-front providers are trying to hold pricing through year-end, but concessions are getting harder to find. Big-box retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s have not announced changes yet. Hardware items such as knobs and pulls are still to be determined.
The Kokeena difference: Made in the USA
Here’s what matters for us at Kokeena: our doors, drawer fronts, and panels are made here in the United States, in collaboration with Portland-area woodworkers and small shops. Because we don’t rely on imported fronts or components subject to tariffs, these changes don’t affect our pricing structure.
That means the quality, craftsmanship, and locally-made values you expect from us remain unchanged for now.
We’ll continue watching the market and will share updates whenever they’re significant. In the meantime, you can count on the same Kokeena standard: locally built and thoughtfully crafted.
