Challenge
Thea and David Mickola, homeowners of a 2,000-square-feet home in Lake Oswego, near Portland, Ore., originally wanted to use high-gloss beige cabinet fronts from IKEA as part of their kitchen remodel. They soon found out the limitations of an all-IKEA kitchen since IKEA cabinets simply didn’t work with their integrated refrigerator and overall vision.
When the IKEA measuring crew visited the house for measurements and learned the couple had been planning for a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator they recommended Kokeena.
Solution
Using Kokeena’s Slabtown in Bianco was a no-brainer since it matched well with IKEA’s high-gloss beige. They also chose simple cabinet hardware, Arbor Pull, from Kokeena. The client needed a fully integrated appliance/storage wall which Kokeena was able to customize around the appliance specifications with no fillers for a sleek look. Bianco, a soft white wood-grained finish, melds perfectly with the light and airy feel the client created.
Without a general contractor, and “ideas all over the place,” Kokeena was able to offer the homeowners smart solutions such as pre-planning sessions, appliance spec review, and product samples to help make an informed decision. Kokeena was also able to act as a sounding board and make recommendations and trouble-shooting difficult applications to get the right fit.
Result
The homeowner’s vision was realized: a kitchen with a light, simple, clean, uncluttered look without feeling harsh and cold, complemented with minimal hardware, and a cooktop with no knobs and a pop-up hidden vent. The refrigerator is fully integrated into a storage wall as is the dishwasher, while the electrical outlet is a hidden pop-up with nothing visible on the tile backsplash.
